He Did What He Could With What He Had

I Samuel 16:21
“Then David came to Saul and attended him; and Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.”

This is what David does. He serves others. He knew the Lord anointed him as king. He wasn't opportunistic. He wasn't thinking when he was to inherit the throne. He did what he was raised to do, to serve others.
He saw a need and went to work to help. Saul was tormented and could have gone insane. With the skills he had, he did what he could. Being the youngest, there were many ahead of him. Earlier, he was asked to stay home with the sheep while his family went to Samuel's banquet. No problem, God will take care of me.
There wasn't plotting in the back of his mind as to how he would take the throne. He might have wondered how this was going to work out. However, that was not plotting. He hadn't been responsible for any of the circumstances that brought him here. He knew he didn't have to engineer the prophecy's fulfillment.
He knew what to do. Use his talents in the opportunity that he was in. We will find ourselves in situations not of our doing. There is a tendency to worry about where this would lead and what we should do. That's not our responsibility. Just do what we know to do.
Samson was a warrior. When he was attacked he looked around for something he could use in his defense. No weapons. However, there was a donkey skeleton. He picked up the jawbone. He used that to kill a portion of an army (Judges 15:16). So, we also do what we can with what we have.
We don't have to look down the road. We are to do what we can at present. This is a relief. The Lord is the one who is working with us in this situation. We don't have to worry about all the intricacies. We can try things, but not with all sorts of investment. Allow the Lord to close and open doors.
There are also seasons. Sometimes opportunities open up for a while. It's not permanent. We do the same thing. We use our talents for the job at hand. Sometimes the job is difficult and possibly stressful. We'll need to rest in the Lord for these. We should do that for small and large jobs. It's the tough ones that tend to cause us stress.
Jesus gives us the wonderful promise in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” The Lord teams up with us. He wants to do this all the time. Ask for help and imagine stepping into the yoke with Jesus in the spot next to us. That's reality.
He is gentle and humble in heart. This is amazing in itself. He is the all powerful, creator and sustainer of all. Yet, He's gentle and humble and accessible. We don't need to worry about being chastised or ridiculed with comments like, "You should know that." He knows our hearts and will not condemn, but love, understand, comfort and support.
Much of the difficulty we put on ourselves with worry and poor attitudes. If we remove that the Lord describes the burden as easy and light. The task may be tough, but with God's help, it will seem easy and light. He wants to fill our hearts with joy and faith. That tends to make things easier.
Lord, thank You that You want to use us in this life. Thank You that You put us in situations that will go towards You glory. Thank You that You are there for us and will help. You don't want us grind us down with worry and work. Help us to look up and trust You.
