Our Rock is Not Like Their Rock

Deuteronomy 32:31
“Indeed their rock is not like our Rock, Even our enemies themselves judge this.”

We all gain strength and comfort from some place. It may be friendships, work, pleasure, nature, religion, healthy food, exercise, and so on. Most of these are good and should have a balanced place in our lives. However, none of these can be a substitute for God.
Our main “go to” is to be the Lord. All of these others sources are limited. When health fails or a job is lost, only God can give lasting comfort and hope. He can work things out for the good or at least, give an eternal context. These others are powerless in these arenas. They should have a place in our lives, but our trust is to be in the Lord.
The same events could befall the the believer and unbeliever, yet He gives hope. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” One may have failing health, but this verse says God customizes our circumstances for our best. It may be for a witness to others, a maturing for us or an exit to heaven. We may not understand it, but He gives us His peace.
Moses calls Him “our Rock”. Jesus gave a parable about building one’s life on the rock. He says the one who obeys His Word is that one. He speaks of how storms may come. Yet a strong foundation will survive the storm. He further says, “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall” (Matthew 7:26,27).
Lord, thank You for the firm foundation You provide. Help us to listen to You and to trust You in the storms.
