I Thessalonians 5:7
“For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night.”
The previous verse addressed being alert. It was more about a spiritual alertness. Today’s verse seems to be about healthy patterns. Night is when we are to sleep. We need our rest for school or work. If we are to be healthy and at our peak performance, we are to have a good nights rest.
More studies are surfacing about the importance of sleep. Poor sleep can affect stress level, blood sugar, a healthy brain, and more. The Lord speaks of the importance of rest. The sabbath is a day of rest. We can think of sleep as being a mini sabbath. It’s restful, cleansing and refreshing.
A good nights sleep feels like a reset. We might go to sleep with a head full of worries, but awaken with a new outlook. David refers to this in Psalm 30:5b, “Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.” This is part of the miracle of His creation. Sleep has this cleansing affect.
Sleeping at night is His created pattern. Scripture is full of these and other natural patterns. This doesn’t mean if someone works the night shift, they are sinning. It’s just a pattern. It’s best if we align ourselves to them. Proverbs speaks a great deal about wisdom. It basically speaks of the healthy patterns that keep us out of trouble. Some of the topics are avoiding anger, work, being wise with money, friendships and more. Sleep is one of these.
Lord, thanks for the blessing of sleep. Thanks for the cleansing, hope and health that it brings.
