Joy, An Indicator of Our Trust

2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”

I enjoy reading Peter’s books. He brings up topics that are commonly thought. Most think God is slow about keeping His promises. Some think the worst. That His pace means He’s not involved or doesn’t exist.

The Lord goes at His pace because that’s what most of us need. He is patient with us. If He were quicker, there would be millions left behind. Instead, He takes His time to draw the most.

He is patient with us. We are all either in a stage of completion or in a place of acceptance of Christ. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.” God is working on us. If we are christians, then He is at some stage of the work.

Many of us fear God’s intervention. We tend to worry what He might do. When The Lord approached Adam and Eve in the garden they attempted to hide (Genesis 3). We have a hiding reflex.

The longer we walk with Him the more we trust Him. We learn that He will work all things for the good. We will go through difficult trials. We will be distressed by them. He tells us to rejoice in all circumstances. Our joy increases. We see that He means it. He does work all things for the good.

He is so patient with us. Do we trust Him? I look at my level of joy as to how much I am trusting. I see my joy as the bubble in the carpenter’s level. It should be constant. Circumstances will cause our joy to increase or decrease. Yet, if we believe that He is in charge and cares, our joy will return. Even if the difficulty remains.

Lord, help us to trust You even though time and trials rock us.
