Responding to Persecution

1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, my little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. Very interesting passage. It comes to mind when I consider spiritual warfare. It certainly applies to that, but I don’t think the immediate context refers to the devil and demons. The following verses refer to people. This is saying that we will overcome our adversaries. This isn’t a Clint Eastwood moment inwhich we get domination. Mainly because the victory John is referring to is different than the world concept of victory. Jesus says we are to love our enemies. That is victory itself. The fact that we aren’t obsessing over them is freeing. Jesus also said, “if some asks us to carry their burden one mile, we are to take it two.” They think they are being abusive and they are. However, we aren’t to play the victim. That doesn’t mean we won’t be upset. We bring that to Christ and He helps us with that. We won’t be gushing with elation as we thank them for helping us serve God. We also aren’t without confidence. I would make a comment about God. The Lord says that doing that is winning. It might not feel like a W, but He is working it out for the best. We don’t have to keep track. He will deal with the end results. Peter says that we joyfully face trials. This won’t be possible, if we have the world’s values. Our eyes are to be focused upward. Our culture is going into bad places. We are to do our duty and leave the results to Him. We can’t stress about outcomes. Lord, thank You that You give us the victory. Help us not to stress about losing battles. Give us the confidence that we’ll win in the end.
