Take Hold of Him

Philippians 3:12
“Not that I have already grasped it all or have already become perfect, but I press on if I may also take hold of that for which I was even taken hold of by Christ Jesus.”
Verse ten had Paul speak of his quest to know God. He’s telling us here that he hadn’t already grasped it or become perfect, but he presses on. He does so that he may take hold of that for which he was taken hold of by Christ Jesus. It’s all knowing God. Our quest is to know Him. That’s the reason God has taken hold of us, for us to know Him.
It reminds me of the books in whom the hero does great things to win the lady. That’s very accurate. The church is called the bride of Christ. He came to earth to redeem all of mankind. He died for His bride. He wants everyone to come to Him. He payed the great price to redeem us.
When many come to Christ, they have no idea about God. I can picture a skittish squirrel. However, God is so patient and loving. Isaiah 40:11 says, “He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.” That is how He treats us.
My first five years in Christ I had a very punishing conscience. Then I heard of God’s grace. I couldn’t believe my ears. I would live freely, but get bogged down with guilt. I would re listen to the message and get free again. It was about God’s grace. It was so freeing.
That shepherd passage is describing Him. God is gentle with us. Which can be very different than our experience. I had a harsh, uncaring stepfather. I felt he delighted in my downfall. Then I met Christ. It took quite a bit of brushing off. The guilty conscience may have been influenced by my stepfather.
Then came joining God’s team. He became my shepherd and father. The bible teaching, church messages and insight from others informed me of Him. The Holy Spirit in my heart connected with me and loved me. So I join Paul, that I may know Him. What a privilege.
He enlists us to be His representatives. We are to tell others about Him. 2 Corinthians 5:11a says, “Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.” God brings people in our path to bless. We share of Him as we are His witnesses. We tell of the great things He’s done for us and can do for them. What a privilege to know we’ve helped others come to Christ. Then they repeat the cycle.
Thank You God for taking hold of us so we can take hold of You. We’ve been redeemed to assist in redemption. You are great, Lord.
