Ephesians 6:5
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.”
The reference to slaves startles some. It’s good to know that God wasn’t seeking to overthrow governments. The rulers of the day sought to trick Jesus into taking sides with governmental issues. Mark 12:17 says, ‘And Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God.” And they were amazed at Him.’ Rome was an oppressive government. Jesus taught His followers how to function within that system. Paul is doing the same thing with this verse.
I’ve heard pastors refer to our relationship with bosses with this verse. Generally, we are to obey our bosses. If they request something illegal, unethical or something that violates God’s law, then we are exempt. But within those constraints, we are to obey our bosses.
Work is a large part of most of most peoples lives. An exception is a parent. So, how we behave at work is a big deal. Romans 12:8 says, “If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.” That includes our bosses and coworkers. God does much work in us through these relationships. Coworkers aren’t chosen by us. Which contrasts with our friends. We would never associate with some of our coworkers. But we do have to get along with them.
I’ve had coworkers and bosses that didn’t like me. God has rescued me multiple times from their bad designs. In some cases, it was miraculous and amazing. I’m not sure what their grievance was against me. But they had an issue. Both circumstances were great reasons for praise to God. In a very small sense, it felt like Haman and Mordecai. It wasn’t public, but they knew it and I did as well. God stopped them in their tracks.
I Peter 3:12 says, “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you.” I have been concerned on several occasions with workplace difficulties. Hebrews 12:6 explains it, “For the Lord disciplines whom He loves, and He scourges every son whom He receives.” God is working His character in us. It’s a sign of His love. Just like a child is alarmed when the parent disciplines them.
The workplace is God’s laboratory. He works on us and others. We are to be a light there. Our lives are to be to His glory. People should be attracted to God by our witness. We might not say much, but our lives should reflect Godly character and hope.
The workplace has brought me much joy. I love my job. The students I work with, and my coworkers are great. This is as it should be. Sometimes work is grievous. As we walk with Christ, He gives us joy, even in the difficulties.
Thank You, God, for work. It has been a great tool in my life. Thank You for the work You’ve done in and through me there.
