2 Samuel 9:7
“Do not be afraid,” said David, “for surely I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
David is blessing his deceased friend's son. I'm impressed with David's generosity, but also made a little nervous. I admire the gift of land and home given. However, he is including this person in his life for the rest of his life. He will have meals with him.
I don't mind giving, but I enjoy the buffer. I would have a hard time having someone over daily. It might be breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I realize God understands my concerns and most likely won't ask that of me (I Corinthians 10:13). If he did, then it would be what I needed. We don't have to go towards our worst fears, but if He leads, then fine.
Fear isn't of God. That's the devil's tool. I used to think God would want me to do that which I feared. I no longer think that. If those thoughts come to mind, I see them as from the devil and seek to ignore them. That's not how God works.
I heard the saying, "The Holy Spirit is a gentleman." While it's not scripture, I do believe it on most occasions. Here's how I understand it. He won't embarrass us. A caring person wouldn't do that. A person told me she was walking across campus and she heard someone should, "Jesus" from the top of a building. After hearing this, I felt prompted to do the same. The thought freaked me out. I have since applied this saying, "The Holy Spirit is a gentleman." That made me settle down.
Lord, help us to be kind to others. I know You will bring up circumstances to assist in this. Help us to be courageous, even if it's something outside our comfort zone.
