2 Samuel 9:1
‘Then David asked, “Is there anyone left from the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for the sake of Jonathan?”’
David was a good friend. He and Jonathon were close. Jonathon was a good guy as well. He knew David was to be king and he was good with that. By order, Jonathon was to be king. It didn't seem to matter to him. His father, Saul, didn't understand his attitude. "'Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the disgrace of the mother who bore you?'"
David and Jonathon were a pair of the great friends throughout the bible. They cared for each other and looked out for one another.
In today's passage, David wants to bless the family of Jonathon, so he asks for any living family. David still is dedicated to Jonathon, even though he isn't alive. He isn't threatened they these descendants will be a threat to his throne. He is quite aware that God has him as king and God has thwarted all of the efforts to threaten David. This is a generosity which has gone beyond.
We should give in a way that doesn't seek to benefit ourselves. Jesus taught this. In Matthew 6:3,4 He said, "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
Lord, help us to be generous in a way that is private. Thank You for all the great blessings You've given. Help us to pass them on.
