Ephesians 3:19
“and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.”
We all have a desire for more. God put that their. Ecclesiastes 3:11b says, "He has set eternity in our hearts". Before Christ we sought to fill that with many things. We would often go overboard or seek to fill that desire with wrong things. It leads many to bad places or broken relationships. God designed us to be filled with Him. We will never be satisfied until we do that.
God is our great creator. He filled us with all sorts of drives. One of those is a desire for Him. David says in Psalm 63:1b, "O God, You are my God. Earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You. My body yearns for You in a dry and weary land without water." We all have this, christian or not. The believer does as David does, He knows it's a thirst for God and seeks Him.
How does one seek God? God gave us His word for food. We are to read and know it. I Peter 2:2 says, "as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby." David understood this. One of the great themes of the psalms is that David treasures the bible. Psalm 119:97, "Oh, how I love Your law! All day long it is my meditation." One way to be filled with the fulness of God is to be in His Word.
Why is the bible so special? Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart." The bible is alive spiritually and when we hear it it comes to life. Jesus says in Matthew 13:23, "But the one sown with seed on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces, some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times as much." Our hearts become a garden for God and His ways.
What is in that garden? It's the fruit of the Spirt spelled out in Galatians 5, "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self control". These are God's traits. He imparts them to us. These are also the fulness of God. It's our spiritual dna. When people see us with these traits, they know we are christians. Instead of hearing, "You must be one of the Jones kids", it's "You must belong to Jesus".
While the bible is our spiritual food, 'Jesus says to them, "My food is that I should do the will of the One having sent Me, and should finish His work"', John 4:34. As we walk with Christ He brings us to people to talk to. He also puts us with difficult people to love. We live with our family and bless them with the fruit of the Spirit. This is so satisfying. It's actually better than food.
The life in Christ is such a blessing. David says in Psalm 23, "My cup overflows." That's the fulness of God. We love each other. He first loved us and the longer we walk with Him the more we love Him. Our small understanding knows so little of God. The more we know, the more we are in awe of Him. Proverbs 4:18 says, "path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday." We burst with the joy of the knowledge of Him and the more we walk with Him the more full we become.
Thank You, God for Your fulness. Help us to share this with others.
