Ephesians 2:20
“having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone”.
Jesus is the most interesting person. I know He is God, so I'm not being disrespectful. I'll get to that. But if we were able to be anything and anyone we could be, it wouldn't be Jesus. Isaiah 53:2 tells us He wasn't a good lucking guy to attract us. He was born poor and in a poor town. He came in this world in an insecure way as he was on the run. He was raised in a region that was mocked His whole life. He never chose to hang out with the cool or powerful crowd. He was arrested like a criminal and killed in a crooked way. Everything about Him was nearly the opposite of what we would have chosen.
"But God" is different than us. He is humble and able to choose the low spot. Today's verse calls Him the chief cornerstone. Part of that comes from how special He is as was described in paragraph one. He is so strong and confident He doesn't need all the superficial things we do.
Another aspect of His specialness is His loving nature. He is the most gentle and safe of people. Isaiah 42:3 says, "A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice." There is little as significant as a bruised reed, but not to God. He could pick it out and bind it up. Jesus paid attention to many on earth like that. Luke 18 tells of a blind man begging. He calls out to Jesus to heal him. He is so insignificant those around him try to silence him. They thought he was wrecking it. The world doesn't value these. They are a dime a dozen and will quickly be gone and forgotten without notice. "But God" valued him.
Jesus didn't pave the way with campaigns trying to ally the powerful to His side. Quite the opposite, He seemed to seek out the powerful to purposely oppose them. People needed to see this. He wasn't seeking their favor. The common folk loved this. Their whole lives was in fear of the popular and powerful. They knew their place and they knew they needed to acquiesce to the powerful. Not Jesus. He went straight to the their home field, the temple and taught. God doesn't play favorites. Anyone can come to Him without fear of being too small to do so.
Jesus came as the most common one, but He performed miracles. On the one hand, He purposefully came as one who wasn't special, but He did miracles. No one can do them. So, He instantly becomes the most special, but not for Himself. It was to validate His message and to help the suffering. It wasn't a magic show to demonstrate how good He was. He has to be the chief cornerstone. No one is so void of insecurities to be able to focus solely on others.
Finally we come to His diety. He is all powerful, all wise and all everything. We know that about God. He came and showed the way in the most unique of ways. We cheer Him. The message of Jesus is so tamed that we miss the magnificence of the way He came. As was said in the Chronicles of Narnia,"He is not safe, but He is good."
Lord, thank You for being our champion. Thank You for saving us in Your wonderful way. You are the chief cornerstone.
