David Became Greater and Greater

2 Samuel 5:10
“David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of armies was with him.”

This is what the Lord does for those who trust Him. The greatness for us might not be greatness as measured by the world, as the way of the cross is foolishness to them. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says this, "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."
It's as if God is an artist and we are all His individual pieces of art (Ephesians 2:10). The process begins with a lump of clay or a blank canvas. Not very impressive. But as we see glimpses over time it becomes more and more beautiful. That's how God works with us all.
The artist makes decisions that confuse the watchers. So we often don't understand what He does with us. I Peter 4:12 says, "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you." He knows us best and He knows what's best for us.
Young people have to choose a major before they enter a university. Many change that. We think we know what we want, but are often disappointed. God knows and if we give Him control, He does good. David became greater and greater because he gave the Lord charge of his life. He would love to do that for us.
He seeks to work in our will. This goes more smoothly when we surrender to Him. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart." The way this works is that He gives us His desires. We learn to love others, even though it's difficult. Loving them becomes our desire and we pray for them. That's His general will that He works in us all.
He works His specific will in us as well. It may be a particular job or places to live. We knock on those doors an He will open, close or say wait. This is a wonderful exciting pattern.
David said it this way, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life", (Psalm 23). Today's verse is another example of that. David became greater and greater. This doesn't mean every day will be a good one. On balance things get better. As was mentioned earlier, greatness for us is usually different than greatness for the world. The improvement might be us gaining mastery over a bully. Not that they stop, but their actions don't bother us.
Lord, thank You for Your blessings. In Your power we are being transformed from glory to glory. Thank You.
