2 Samuel 4:11
“How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood from your hands and eliminate you both from the earth?”
Some are influenced by power and will do anything to get it and keep it. It reminds me of the mafia. Much evil is done for the sake of power. David was not that way. He had two opportunities to kill Saul, but He refused. He had his standards.
These were jealous for David and assassinated Israel's king. It was done in a cruel and merciless way. When they reported this to David, he put them to death.
Not everything that works in our favor is good. It might not be for us to right the situation, but we should not rejoice in some actions, even though in the end it's a positive. God may be bringing punishment or allowing some to reap what they've sown. We aren't to rejoice.
Paul tells us how we are to be in Romans 12:18,19, 'If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”' It's not our job to pay back. We can talk to the offender and we can change the relationship, but we aren't to pay back.
This is God's mercy in that He takes the position of dealing with these matters. These issues are too intense for us and they would get us deeper into trouble. They may turn it around and perform retribution on us. We are to give these things to God.
Jesus tells us how to be in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.” When we start to engage in retribution, we sense it in our souls. We get hardened and angry. We are conflicted, because we are outside of God's will. The peace of God is silenced at these times. Chaos and darkness rule in us.
Don't give in to the desire for revenge. It can be strong and others may pressure us to engage in it. Just as David put an end to the injustice, so can we. It may be unpopular, but we can let it go.
Lord, thank You that You take those matters from us. Give us the courage to ignore the crowd and obey You.
