Authority and Leadership

2 Samuel 2:7
“Now then, let your hands be strong and be valiant, since Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

It's finally time for David to be king. Two other times presented themselves, but they involved Saul being killed by David's men. They pressured him to allow it. He refused. He would not kill the Lord's anointed.
Now David is asserting himself. The void was created, he was anointed the second time the Lord gave guidance. Now he is verbalizing his role.
The Lord will give us tasks to take up. It may not be official, but if He is opening the doors, we should step in.
If the Spirit is blessing, we should ride the wave of that blessing. When it expires, thank Him for it and move on.
Sometimes we are given roles and the authority that goes with it. Walk in them. We aren't to be nervous to lead. This was David's time. He was walking and speaking this authority. Not in an arrogant, pushy way, but in an appropriate one. We will be given authority at times in our lives. We are to lead well.
We are to lead with confidence and in humility. It's easy to abuse the office. Some in laziness push off their responsibilities to those under them. Others try to intimidate. In leading well, we build loyalty. David had over four hundred men who followed and would fight for him. They stuck with him through tough years and challenging circumstances. They were loyal.
Leaders reap what they sow. If they sow grace and understanding, they will reap it. I heard of a pastor who had a child who got in trouble. Instead of the congregation kicking him out (which is biblical), they supported him and his family through this time.
How are we to treat those under us? Lovingly. Jesus told us to do unto others as we wished they would do unto us. Lead as we wished to lead. We should often do more. This would build loyalty, respect and will raise the standards on the team.
The Lord used David for much throughout his life. He wrote the Psalms, leaving a great example of our relationship with God. He demonstrated great faith and trust. He was an inspiring, manly role model. He was a humble and good friend. God allowed him to be in line with the messiah and so on.
Lord, thank You for David. In so many ways I have grown through Your use of him. The crown might be Psalm 23. Thank You.
