2 Samuel 2:1
‘Then it came about afterward that David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” So David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.”’
Samuel's prophecy over David is finally being fulfilled. God said that He would be king. God had much preparation for him. If he felt conceited or special that had long since been purged from him.
The last ten years (or so) had him on the run. Saul was trying to protect his (and Jonathon's) kingdom and he knew the people and God favored David. Wives were given then taken from him along with so many changes of fortune.
David knew that God was good and would care for him. He learned that many times over and so many nuances of that lesson. Psalm 23 could have been penned when he was a shepherd. God had shepherded him for the past 15 amazing, but challenging years.
This the obvious time for David to take the throne. Even now, he's subservient to God. He doesn't allow circumstances or enthusiasm take him over, but prays and asks. The Lord is teaching all of us through David.
Like David, we are to pray. Paul described it as praying without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17). The Lord wants us to pray whenever we have need. We aren't to wait until we're alone. Right then, pray.
This is a day David has been waiting for a long time. Not so much to be king, but to free from running from his enemies. We've never seen any opportunism in him. He trusted God for all that. He was weary from running.
God takes care of timing issues. Proverbs 3:5, 6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all you ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths."
David never seemed to stress about that. We don't hear him complain, "Why me?" He knew well that God had him and could manage the circumstances. Keeping him safe and raising him to be king were be things David entrusted to God.
We also don't need to worry about timing and position. God's got that. As was said in Proverbs, we acknowledge Him and trust Him for that. It's a blessing and quite a load off to allow Him to take care of that. Jesus said in Matthew 6:26, "Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
God will open the doors for us in His timing. We don't have to manipulate the circumstances. If He wants it for us, He will open those doors. He equips us for any task He asks us to do. It's like on the job training. David didn't come from royalty and God spent his entire life preparing him.
Our job is to step into the roles and circumstances He provides. David says, "Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?" We don't have to worry about our inadequacies. He knows our shortcomings and He's not worried. In fact He knows that prompts us to trust Him more. It's all good.
Lord, thank You for all of this. You have our lives all mapped out. We just trust, obey and follow. Thank You.
