I Samuel 30:26
Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoils to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, “Behold, a gift for you from the spoils of the enemies of the LORD…”
This was the second blessing David was involved with since the enemies actions. Just to recap, David and his warriors returned to Ziklag to find their wives and children taken captive along with their own property. The people had talked of stoning David. But he kept his focus and trust in the Lord. They pursued them and God gave them a complete victory. Their loved ones were still alive and they recovered their property. What they also got was the spoils from the enemy. This is what David is sharing with the people.
God can restore what we've lost. Joel 2:25 says, "I will restore to you that which the swarming locust has eaten..." In the New Testament, it says, "I will work all things for good to those who love God and are called to His purpose", (Romans 8:28). This is simply amazing. This gives us trust. We don't know how He'll do this. It usually isn't an exact restoration, it will be better.
Malachi 3:10 says God will "open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing" to those that trust and obey. We will end up with far more. It can include the material, but always the spiritual. David says in Psalm 23, "My cup runneth over". He also says, "I shall not want". We all want things, but when in Christ, we learn to submit those to God's authority. Some He will satisfy, others He will extinguish and save us from the futility that things can bring. He honors our obedience with a full heart.
It's like the father allowing the child to sit in his lap and drive. The child has minimal control, but not in his mind. God is doing much of the orchestrating. He allows us to have some involvement. As we've walked with Him for a while we learn that with Him we can do all things and without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).
David is sharing this blessing with his friends and followers. He knows full well that God did this. The Psalms are full of his experiences with God. David was a warrior of God's design. We get a misconception of a godly person. Jesus spoke kindly to children and gave images of holding lambs, but He also overturned tables and confronted the powers of the day for misrepresenting God.
God will similarly bless us and He will allow us to be a blessing to others. We are like the kid in the dad's lap. We are involved. He gives us gifts and talents to exercise. The bible says, "A man's gifts make room for him...", (Proverbs 18:16). David was blessed as a warrior. Many of the warrior type followed him. David's skill blessed others and gave them an outlet for their own warrior ways.
David was God's man, he led others to God. He had to correct them on occasion. In this same instance, some of his men didn't want to share the spoils with those who stayed back. David didn't allow them to do this. At times we need to make such stands.
Thank You Lord that You use us to bless others. What a privilege.
