Galatians 4:7
“Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.”
This keeps getting better and better. We are heirs of God. Let's discuss that. Most of us have average parents who aren't wealthy. We have to get equipped, find a job and work it to support ourselves. Wealthy heirs usually go into the family business. They've gone to the best schools and have been raised of the highest priviledge. They have had tutors academically, socially and for their jobs.
The average person finds their own way through primary and secondary education. We learn how to fit in socially. Most do just fine, while some struggle. Wouldn't it have been nice to have support for all of that. An aware person would know what a child goes through and could offer support. They could anticipate stages and prepare them. They would have insight into what bothers a child and be of assistance to them. An heir of wealth could have paid for nannies to offer this.
We are heirs of God. He is only the most wise, powerful and wealthy. What does that entitle us to? This is actually far superior than what I've described. First, we get His attention. Because He is God He is able to give attention to the billions on the planet. Isaiah 41:10 says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." The wealthy couldn't provide this personal support. The Lord knows our minds, hearts and vulnerabilities. He protects us if we seek Him.
He is mindful of us. Psalm 139:17,18 says, "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You." Our insecurities would melt away if we knew the wonderful thoughts the Lord has towards us. He knows parts of us that we are unaware of. He knows our strengths and the special parts of ourselves. We would inflate with contentment and confidence if we knew this. As we mature in the faith, this becomes our reality. We know and experience His love.
He guides us. Proverbs 3:5,6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct Your paths." His guidance forms our character, abilities, our career and friendships. At the end of our lives, He wants us to be able to agree with Clarence the angel, "George, you really had a wonderful life."
He wants all of us to have a Psalm 23 life. One in which we: do not want, lie down in green pastures, are led besides the still waters, He restores our souls, He guides us in righteousness, goodness and mercy will follow us, when we go through dark times, He's there, we won't fear for He's with us, His rod and staff comfort us, He prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies and we will dwell in His house forever. This is the Lord's will for us. These are the riches that accompany His heirs.
Lord, thank You for our adoption. Thank You for all the care You show us. Even though some may have rough upbringings, You replace that with a new experience. Thank You that it will bring us to an eternity with You.
