A Respectful Approach

Galatians 2:2
“It was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.”

Paul was new on the christian leadership scene. He had wonderful insights into the gospel. The book of Romans was revolutionary. He went to Jerusalem to share this perspective. He mentioned that when this was presented to those of reputation, he did so in private. This was respectful.
Presentation is important. We don’t want to embarass or pressure people. Especially if it’s in front of others. If so, they may respond in a reactionary manner. This could set back what Paul was doing. He describes it as risking running in vain. He has invested much in his ministry and message. There were those in Jerusalem who had a law emphasis. While Paul was introducing the wonderful freedom in Christ. If he had the wrong approach with these leaders, he may have diminished his influence.
There is much in scripture which encourages being respectful. Matthew 18:15 says, “If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.” We don’t want to publicly do these things. Today we’ve got social media. Some air the dirty laundry that way. That will only enrage the individual. The undesirable behavior will only increase.
Another example about being concerned about the approach is from Esther. “All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death…” While we don’t have mortal threats against us, there are situations inwhich we don’t feel comfortable. Jesus’ comment in Matthew 10:19 seems appropriate, “But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.” The Lord will help us navigate situations that are threatening.
Lord, help us to be wise when addressing others. Thank You for assisting us.
