II Thessalonians 1:5,6
“All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,”
This is an interesting verse. There are two difficult points. The first is believer’s will suffer persecution. 2 Timothy 3:12 says, “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Jesus also said in John 15:20, “…If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you…”.
This seems odd to us. We live in America, which some say was founded as a christian nation. Up until recently, most were christians. So, the persecution was mild, if at all. However, academia and the entertainment industry often belittle those of faith. Outside of that, I don’t recall persecution. There probably were some social exclusions due to my faith. That was the environment of my adult years.
However, today’s political climate is hostile. While it’s not aimed at believers, it’s getting close. The frustration of many is heightened and some are resorting to confronting those who may not agree. It may be that some may tie this to believers. All this is part of today’s verse; believers will be persecuted.
A second uncomfortable portion of this passage is “for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you.” We focus much on God’s love. It’s difficult to know that God will afflict some. We tend to think this is only for criminals and the extreme cases.
Who will He afflict? Those who oppose Him, His message or His people. I referred to academia and the entertainment industry. I would also include some in politics. These are large groups in public that oppose Him. However, this also applies to individuals.
When will He do the afflicting? It’s rarely immediate. Today’s verse seems to refer to the judgment that occurs after life on earth. In Psalm 73, David shares his frustration in that the arrogant seem to have it easy. He thinks their ungodly and abusive behavior should be punished. However, they seem to be the most prosperous. In verse 17 of that same psalm, David visits the temple and that puts it all in perspective. God takes care of it. He’s able to rest.
These are the two uncomfortable truths of today’s passage, believers will undergo persecution and the persecutors will be held accountable. Lord, help us not be opposed to You, Your Word or Your people. Also, help us to bear up under any sort of resistance. Give us the confidence and joy that You promise
