II Thessalonians 1:4
“therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure.”
Paul was impressed that the Thessalonians were growing strong in their faith even though they were living with persecution. Paul first met them in Acts chapter 17. He visited the synagogue for three weeks; some of the jews believed along with many greeks. Thus the church was born in that town. However, some of the locals were jealous. They recruited agitators to stir up a riot. That’s how the church was introduced to Thessalonica.
Paul’s words seem to indicate that the atmosphere was roiling at the time of his writing. This would affect them in many ways. There could be social ramifications. They may have lost friends. They may be ostracized from making new ones. Depending on the business, it could be a damaged. Some may choose to go elsewhere. If the boss is hostile to faith, then the workplace could be difficult for the christian. If there are children in the home, then they may feel ostracized as well.
We also may feel unwelcome due to our faith. People feel this at different levels. Other countries have government sponsored persecution. Others tolerate it from radical groups. In the US, faith is mocked from the entertainment industry and academia. This has an affect. Some aren’t open to the gospel, because of this. Others will belittle it.
This mild persecution affects us. We feel self conscious about our actions. We anticipate rejection if we bring up the wonderful things God is doing in our lives.
It’s not wrong to feel this. We shouldn’t allow this hesitancy to quiet us. Paul asks the church to pray for him that he will be bold in sharing his faith (Ephesians 6:19). We should pray that same prayer. Jesus cautions us about being ashamed of Him (Luke 9:26). It’s not wrong to feel that way. We shouldn’t let those reactions to silence us.
The Lord is so good to us. He rescues, provides for, encourages, guides and so on. To stand for Him is right. We usually don’t like those who are opposed. Be bold and press on.
Lord, thank You for the example of the Thessalonians. Help us to confidently live for You. Help us amidst the negativity that’s aimed at You and Your people.
