I Thessalonians 5:5
“for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness.”
I Peter 2:9 says that God called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. This is interesting. Without Christ, it says we were in darkness. Yet when we accept Him, we’re in the light. This is referring to the spiritual realm. We may not have felt the affect immediately. However, our zip code was changed from darkness to light.
Without Christ’s forgiveness our sin separated us from God. He was still leading us to Him and loving us in a distant way. Yet we were in darkness. Being in this state doesn’t mean we didn’t (or can’t) experience levels of happiness and a good life. He created us and this wonderful world to be enjoyed.
We probably weren’t (aren’t) aware we were in that state. However we did (or are) feel the affects of darkness. These are sadness, anxiety, sleeplessness, failed relationships and so on. A word of caution. We still can feel these things in Christ. Yet, we should be growing out of them. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says we are becoming more like Christ, going from one glorious stage to the next.
This darkness, while a condition, is more about the absence of the Lord. Our sin separated us from Him. Once we accept Christ we are united. The darkness is gone. Revelation 21:23 speaks of the new heaven and how there will be no need for a sun, for God is the light. We are in the light because we are with Him.
Lord, thank You for Your light. Help us to stay close to You. Remaining in Your light.
