We are His Portion, If We Choose

Morning Journal
Deuteronomy 32:9
“For the LORD’S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.”

In verse 8, the people’s portion was the land. They had gained a home after circling the wilderness for forty years. Today’s passage tells us of God’s portion. It’s us, His people.
We may be surprised by what’s not on the list: the riches and precious things, the great sites or wonders of the world, the stars, planet and galaxies, the animals and creation. In one sense it’s all His. But He doesn’t say that. We own plenty of things, yet we don’t prize them all. He claims us as His inheritance.
I can imagine a scene in which a parent has passed away. The adult children are gathered and they are going about the room choosing the things they want. In verse 8, the people get a land to live in. There’s almost an awkward silence. God is the other party involved. What will He get? He chooses us.
The Lord’s choice is on a different plane. The other parties are choosing based on their self interest. This isn’t wrong. Yet God’s choice is one of a higher level. He chooses us. He cares for us and wants to care for us. His choosing us is the best thing for us.
How are we to respond to this? He cares for us. If we’ve become a Christian, then we are His. He wants to help us, heal us, speak to our hearts, guide us and use us to bless others. The greatest part that He wants for us is to be in relationship with us. We want it as well, even if we don’t know it. This is the missing piece that we all yearn for. Our spirits “cry out, ‘Abba Father'” (Romans 8:15). Plants and flowers reach towards and face the sunlight. So we yearn for Him. As we commune with the Lord, are in His Word, in fellowship and serve others we are filled with all His goodness, growth and healing. It’s like adding miracle grow to soil.
This is what He wants, for us to connect with Him. He’s our father. He wants us to be in relationship to Him. That’s His choice for inheritance.
Lord, thank You for Your choosing us. Help us to respond to You and grow in our relationship with You.
