Deuteronomy 32:9
“For the LORD’S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.”
This passage speaks of God’s portion and His inheritance. To understand this we can learn much by looking at ourselves, as we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26).
What are our rewards? What are the things we dream of and work for? If we are married, our primary human relationship is with our spouse. Investing our time, patience and love in that is job one. Failing there will cause all the other relationships to be fragile. Succeeding there will create a happy, confident person who loves all around. We benefit by gaining a wonderful coparent and by having a spouse that will love us in return.
As a parent I think of our children. We pour our time and love into them. Our reward is to see them living happily and responsibly. Particularly as they follow Christ. It’s also a blessing when we are continuing in relationship with them. Hopefully it will continue with their spouses and grandchildren.
Our jobs come next as we need to create an income to be self sufficient and care for our family (I Timothy 5:8). We will spend the majority of our time here. Those that are mothers raising children are forming happy, competent kids. If we are at the workplace our bosses and customers should be satisfied and happy with our service. In turn, we gain a great deal of satisfaction and an income.
We will have friends and hobbies that we invest in. However, they are secondary.
What does God invest in? What does He dream of and work towards? Today’s passage says it’s us, His people. This makes sense. He instilled within us a desire to care for our family and friends. We want to see them grow and prosper. That desire came from God. He wants the same in us. It brings Him joy to see us walking with Him and doing well.
John said in his 3rd epistle, “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth” (1:4). This joy is reflective of how God feels. He has no greater joy than to see us walking in the truth. It’s fulfilling to know that He has so much joy over us. That amount of care is amazing. We are His portion and His reward.
Lord, thanks that You care so much for us. Thanks that You consider us Your reward.
