Our Response to Difficulties

I Thessalonians 3:2,3
We sent Timothy, our brother and God’s fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that none of you would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this.”

Trials play a part in our lives. I’m not talking about the ones that come by our bad choices. We will go through rough times. They may be difficult circumstances, poor relationships, health problems, the harsh responses by our living a christian life and so on.
How do we respond? We do our best to repair the situation. All the while we are bringing it to The Lord, asking for His help (Romans 12:18).
These problems might be short lived, for months, years or a lifetime burden.
What’s our attitude to be? Romans 5:3 says, “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” We are to rejoice. This is a very mature response. We aren’t thankful for the problem, but a demonstration of trust that God will work it out for the best. We will still attempt to repair and be rid of the problem. We trust that God thought it best to allow us to go through this.
These are not easy lessons to learn. That’s why Paul mentions that the pastor is to strengthen and encourage the people in their faith. It’s not natural to have such an attitude during difficulties.
Why does The Lord allow us to go through these trials? One reason is listed above in Romans 5:4,5. They are for our maturing and growth. All people go through problems. Because our lives are submitted to God, He customizes our circumstances to make us better. It’s been said that “The same sun that melts butter, hardens clay.” These trials can make us better or bitter. It’s up to us how we respond.
Another reason He would allow these trials is to glorify His name (John 9:2,3). While He has His reasons, we rarely know it. We just need to trust that He will work things out for the best.
Lord, thanks that You work things out for the good. Help us to rejoice in all our circumstances.
