To Influence and Be Influenced

I Thessalonians 2:14
“For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews,”

We, as people, are easily influenced. We adopt the values and habits of our peers. This can be good or bad. It depends on those we’re around. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, ‘Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good character.”‘ And Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
The Lord created us this way. It’s not bad, it needs to be understood. We might like one’s personality, yet ignore their questionable values. We will be influenced, if we want to or not.
Parents attempt to instill this lesson in their children. They may ask them not to associate with particular friends. This is difficult for everyone.
Today’s passage refers to how the Thessalonians were imitating the good traits of the surrounding churches. Paul was very pleased. They chose good models and were influenced in a positive way.
Who are the mentors and peers in our lives? Are they good ones? This is why it’s important to go to church. Hebrews 10:25 says, “And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
God created the church to be a safe place for us. They aren’t perfect, but no place is. We need to be involved in one and grow through those influences.
Finally, we need to be those good influences for others. God will put us in positions and there will be those who are drawn to us or who benefit by being in our sphere. It’s important to realize this and adjust our behavior based on who is around.
Lord, help us to have good influences in our lives. Help us to be those good influences to those around us.
