Deuteronomy 26:17
“You have today declared the LORD to be your God, and that you would walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments and His ordinances, and listen to His voice.”
This is the third entry on listening to God’s voice. Today, we’ll talk about hearing God’s voice in a personal manner. Last time we addressed hearing His voice through His Word. Today will be more subjective. There are several scriptures that will guide us.
Revelation 3:20 refers to hearing His voice. This is basic as it tells us about the speaking and listening process between God and people. How do we recognize His voice? Matthew 11:29 tells us what Jesus is like, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” His voice comes from a gentle and humble place. It won’t be loud, shocking or intimidating. We learned last time His primary voice is the scriptures. His subjective voice will never contradict the bible.
Our spirit bears witness with Him. Romans 8:16 describes this, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” As we walk with Christ we can feel the union we have with Him. He interacts with us. It’s as if He gives us high fives in our day. His words to us will be the same. Our spirt will have a knowing. We might not recognize it as coming from Him initially. We also need time to weed out our own desires and other false messages. Yet, there will be a sensing that it’s right.
If the message is encouragement, it’s safe to take it. If it’s directional, take time for confirmation. Wise friends will be a good barometer. Check with them.
This is being in communion with God. In Psalm 23, God describes this as “my cup runneth over”. God is so good. Walking is this manner is a great blessing.
Lord, thanks for Your voice. Thanks for the richness that You give us. Thanks for Your encouragement and guidance.
