2 Peter 3:11
“Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness.”
Eschatology is the study of end times. It’s very interesting. Jesus, the Old Testament prophets and most of the New Testament writers including John in Revelation speak of it. Peter makes a reference to the Earth being destroyed by fire. Revelation 21:1 speaks of a new heaven and earth. These will replace the old ones. All of this will eventually take place.
For some future generation or possibly ours, life will be interrupted. This is concerning. I can recall hearing this message when I was 18. It was scary. It was partially what led me to Christ. That’s what the message is supposed to do, lead one to God. If one isn’t a christian, then this message has a way of having an influence to become one.
The message also has an affect on christians. It tends to draw us close, if we’ve strayed. Peter refers to their “conduct and godliness”.
Some churches teach it too often, while some don’t mention it at all. Those are the two extremes. That’s why it’s helpful when churches teach through books of the bible. This topic is within most of them. As the pastor progresses through the book of choice, the topic is taught at some point.
We need to be reading the bible on our own. We will come across it ourselves. It’s even in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” We need to hear this message and let it have it’s cleansing affect.
Lord, thanks that You are coming back. Help us to walk closely to You.
