2 Peter 3:8
“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.”
I’ve heard it said that time is part of creation; The Lord isn’t bound by it. He lives in eternity. He looks at the timeline of humanity from beginning to end and sees it all occurring at once. He sees creation, the fall, Jesus’ death, our birth and life and the Second Coming at the same time. This is a theory, but it seems to fit biblically.
A day is a small measure of time when compared to a year or ten years. A thousand years is 25 generations. These are vary different to us. However, to God they are the same.
Today’s passage is in the context of judgement. The mockers that Peter is talking about say that because it has taken a long time, it’s never going to happen. Peter is focusing on their concept of time and saying that it doesn’t apply to God.
We are bound by time. How does it affect us? If we are in a difficult season, then it’s distressing. If not, then we rarely think about it. Those in today’s passage were deluded by time. It’s almost as if the absence of His judgement equated to there being no god. They kept putting off dealing with God, that they hoped He never would keep them to account.
We need to be responsible with our time. Are we procrastinating with God? Are we behaving as we should? Do we think we have plenty of time to get right? Psalm 139:23,24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.” This is a good attitude. We should want to get right with God and be willing to do it now.
Lord, You’ve created us within time. Help us to be responsible with in it.
