2 Peter 3:6
“By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.”
Peter is addressing those that deny Christ’s Second Coming. He brings up the fact that long ago, the world was destroyed by water in the flood.
Hebrews 11:7 says this of Noah, “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.”
Peter is talking about those that deny the warning about the 2nd coming. These are doing so in light of much evidence. Romans 1:19 says, “because that which is known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it unto them.”
Why do these deny God’s assurance? A couple verses earlier in 2 Peter, he says, “they are following after their own desires.” Romans 1 has much to say on that topic. Their senses and drives become more important than God’s ways, words and directions.
God wants us to see beyond the immediate. Noah is such an example. The above passage says that when he was “warned about things not yet seen.” A flood hadn’t occurred and it’s possible that the environment didn’t accommodate rain. What he did believe was God. Our circumstances may be horrible, but we have a God who is bigger than them. He wants us to see His purposes on a higher plain. He will work things out for the good.
Noah began a task that would take him a 100 years to complete. Preflood people lived longer. The point is that his faith was in God and His word. The people of his time probably thought he was a fool. They would probably visit the ark as a topic of interest. They would mock him.
This brings us back to the topic of the 2nd coming. It’s taking a long time. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Trust in God. Be like Noah and let His Word be the compass the guides us.
Lord, help us to heed Your Words. Don’t let us get distracted by the immediate.
