2 Peter 1:19
“So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts”.
This is a beautiful description of how the awareness of Christ comes about to us. Literally the Old Testament was the lamp in the darkness. It illuminates, but it’s still night. The light is limited. It shared it’s message. The New Testament is the coming of Christ. This is the dawning day.
It also works as a metaphor of how God speaks to us. Each of us hears the message of Christ. It may be a literal message or it may be the life of a christian that impacts us. This is like the light of a lamp. It shines in our dark hearts.
We either respond to the light or ignore it. When we respond, our hearts soften. If we ignore it, our hearts become calloused. When we respond to the light shown God usually gives more. I think of the parable of the talents. The one who was faithful, gets more.
This passage also has a “kingdom come” feel to it. That will be the true day. In this world we still have sin, the flesh and the devil to contend with. These bring much grief. There will come a day when we will be in His kingdom. We would have passed away or Jesus would have returned. We will be in eternity. In that place there will be no sorrow and no tears (Revelation 21:4). As we walk with Christ we learn that He is our joy. The longer we walk with Him, the appeal of this world dims. When we are in Heaven we will be with Him in a full way. Our fellowship will be complete.
Lord, thank You for reaching out to us with Your lamplight. Help us to daily respond to the light You give us. Until that day comes and we are with You fully.
