Deuteronomy 11:18
“You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.”
Moses tells the people that they are to love God’s Word. They were to impress them upon their hearts and soul. They were to attach them to their hands and foreheads. We are to do the same.
We’ve all had to memorize things. With all the tests and quizzes we’ve taken as young people, we’ve had to memorize facts and dates. Normally this is for the purpose of passing. The class usually has no interest in one’s personal interest. Thus the memorizing is drudgery. That’s where the bible is different. As we learn it, we begin to love it.
God’s word has several functions. It’s analogized as many things, food, seed, it’s living, etcetera. The bible is food for our spirits. This is the primary way it grows. Hebrews 5:12 says, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” The audience neglected the bible and it kept them as spiritual infants.
An example of an area of growth is trust. A child learns to trust a parent to have needs met. Initially the child cries. There’s a panic as to whether it will be satisfied. After a while the child is more patient. God wants us to trust Him. He says He monitors our “life circumstances” as we give ourselves to Him. We often go through difficult times. He doesn’t want us to be anxious, but to trust and learn through them. He wants us to get to the point where we thank Him for these times. Not for them, but what maturity that He brings us. Also for the fact that He cares for us and integrally involved with us.
This is why we are know the bible. It helps us get to know God and His ways better.
Lord, thank You for Your Word. Help us to know You better through it.
