2 Peter 1:3
“seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”
The last time in 2 Peter the focus was on the power The Lord grants unto us. It is enough. We don’t have to want and we don’t need to worry about our needs. He will meet them according to His will.
How does He do this? Today’s passage says it’s “through the true knowledge of Him who called us”. This is very interesting. I think of two types of knowledge: knowledge about and experiential knowledge. I believe they both apply. We will cover the first one today.
Knowledge of Him is a first step. It sounds academic, but it’s more than that. As we hear and read His Word it gets in us. It’s different than wise words in a good book. It’s alive, grows and bears fruit. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active…” As we eagerly and prayerfully receive His Word, we become transformed through His power by it.
Some of the rate of our maturity depends on our attitude and involvement. Hebrews 5:12 says, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” Their selfishness and lack of interest in God’s Word stunted their growth.
We need to develop an appetite for His Word. 1 Peter 2:2 says, “like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation”. Our new spirits want it. If we feed it, then our craving for it grows. If we ignore it, it withers.
Lord, help us to feed on Your Word. Thank You that You cause us to grow by it.
