1 Peter 4:16
“but if a man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.”
There’s all types of suffering to be had. There’s the normal resistance that life brings. This is not our fault. There’s the suffering that’s brought on by our bad choices. That is our fault. Peter addressed that a few verses earlier when he said, “let no one suffer as a murderer”. Today’s topic is the suffering that is incurred us because of our faith. The bible calls this persecution.
This type is suffering is brought on as we live our faith. Some of our actions stand out. One may be not take the advice of an accountant due to ethics; even though thousands of dollars would be saved. There may be a hint of ridicule by the accountant. As if anyone in there right mind would do this.
We may share our faith or interject biblical advise in a conversation. Sometimes it’s met with rejection. There are some very controversial changes our culture is making. Many are not biblical. We don’t have to provoke people. However, these may come up. Sometimes the response can be strong.
The verse tells us not to be ashamed. This is the reflex response when being ridiculed. However, we aren’t to give into this. How is this done? Stay in scripture. It gives the whole picture. God wins the game. We may feel low, but it’s half time. Share these struggles with christian friends. They are like wartime stories. We can get encouragement. In the Book of Acts, Peter and his friends were brought to court for speaking of Jesus. They boldly held their ground and left together, confidently praising The Lord.
Lord, help us to be wise in our words. Help us not to provoke others. However, help us to speak up when required. Help us not to be ashamed, but to give You thanks.
