“The End is Near”: Dreadful or Joyful?

1 Peter 4:7
“The end of all things is near…”
God wants us to live with that notion in mind. This creates unease. We would like to know the time. However, we don’t get that luxury. So we have to always be in a state of readiness. Jesus talked about the kingdom of God being at hand. This is another comment that makes one want to be ready.
Why does The Lord give us these predictions? I can’t say for sure, but I would say that we have a tendency to relax in a state of of being ill prepared. What does that mean? Adam and Eve hid from God. That’s our problem, too. At times, we avoid Him. In addition to discomfort, we do this because we want to do what we want. We fear that He won’t allow us freedom. Satan’s fall had much to do with his plans, which were contrary to God’s (Isaiah 14:13,14).
What about freedom? He does give it; yet not 100%. He gives us commandments and guidelines. Most of these are negative (don’t do that). They leave a huge amount open. In addition to the Ten Commandments, I believe when we accept Christ and receive Him as lord, He gives us direction through inner promptings. These can be uncomfortable at times. However, they keep us out of trouble and in His path of blessing.
The desire to be rid of Him is to be avoided. We should not feel dread when we hear, “the end is near”. This is great news. Jesus taught us to pray for it: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. The bullies won’t have their way. These are the personal bullies, as well as those in government that are not friendly to faith and morality.
Lord, thank You that You will come and establish Your rule. Help us to rejoice in it.
