Deuteronomy 2:5
“do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a footstep because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.”
I was glad to see this passage. While Esau was foolish and a quicktempered man. He traded away his birthright for a meal. Hebrews 12:17 says that he begged to get it back. Even with tears. It wasn’t to be.
He traded God’s best for him. I’m sure we have done that. He’s had something better, but we disobeyed. There are plenty of mistakes we’ve made that we can’t undo. Pastor Chuck Smith gave an analogy of hammering a nail into wood. It can be removed, but there is still the impression from the nail. The damage is done. So, also Esau sold his birthright.
God still had something for Esau. God had promised him land. God was protecting Esau’s children. The descendants of his brother Jacob, weren’t to get any of it.
So God still loves us and has a plan for us, even though we’ve made mistakes. I think of Peter. He denied Christ when He was in need. His betrayal increased Jesus’ burden. Yet, God still loved and used Peter.
There is forgiveness for us. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” There is hope for us. We aren’t written off or discarded.
Lord, thank You that You love us and take us as we are.
