1 Peter 2:25
“…for by His wounds you were healed.”
This phrase puts it very concisely. The story of our healing is a great one. Early on, all that God was and offered was withheld from us due to our sin. Jesus paid for that by the whip and the nail. As the veil was famously torn in two when He died; access to God was gained. Those on earth didn’t understand what had been done. The millenia old curse was removed; atleast for those who want gone. In the movie, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, spring comes to Narnia. Aslan’s sacrifice has changed much.
Over time, God has slowly unfolded His Plan. It was done by type in Egypt. The blood over the doorpost spared them. A temporary system of laws and sacrifices was given. It was cumbersome and limited. There was a relationship with God, just greatly filtered. Almost like trying to have a phone conversation with a poor connection. It’s appreciated, but can be frustrating.
Everything about Jesus from His birth to all parts of His life contained sabotage attempts. Evil thought it had won at the cross. The devil didn’t know that he assisted in God’s plan. The curse was broken. Winter has thawed.
How are we healed? This verse seems to be a quote from Isaiah 53:5. That whole chapter speaks of the suffering servant (prophesied about Jesus). “He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities.” Sin is addressed first. We are forgiven of it, but it’s power in some form remains. It no longer needs to be yielded to. The sanctification process is our slowly overcoming it. He helps us.
While God does heal people physically, we aren’t promised it. There are broken parts of us that He mends. Broken hearts, damaged emotions, addictions, betrayals, and more. This is His department. Ps 147:3 says, “He binds up the broken hearted…” It’s not overnight. But as we stay in His Word and yielded to Him, He will do it. Those who had only known misery are now helped. Those that have been rejected are now accepted. As we patiently follow Him, a new day has dawned.
Lord, thank You that You have healed us. Thank You for Your great sacrifice. Help us to yield to You and Your ways and acquire healing as we go.
