Hearing His Voice

I John 2:26,27 “These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you. As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.” This passage doesn’t mean we don’t need to go to church to receive teaching. It means that we have an internal error detector within, the Holy Spirit. When we hear error, we have a check in our spirits. The more we are in the Word, the more He has to use. This doesn’t mean we can’t go astray. Christians are deceived and wander into cults. If christains are deceived, does this mean that the Holy Spirit did a poor job? We still have free will and can choose to ignore Him. The warnings are occur, there is something appealing that causes a person to ignore them. It may be the charisma of the speaker or the allure of the message. I think of the prosperity gospel. It would be nice to “believe away all our problems”. Just as a fish follows a lure, we can be drawn away with deception. Part of maturity is to discern His voice. Just as a dog knows the master’s voice, so we grow in discerning His voice from our conscience, our thoughts, the devil’s implanted thoughts, etc.. As we grow in His Word, the more discerning we become. There are many places in scripture that refer to hearing His voice. Revelation 3:20 ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” His voice is present, do we hear it? There is so much noise and distraction. He may have been knocking for years. We may have not recognized it, not heard it or ignored it. We receive reminders all the time. Twenty minutes ago, I saw a full trash can. I paused the warned to time it for when I was done with quiet time. That doesn’t guarantee that I’ll remember. He may have told us something dozens of times. We often pause it for several reasons. Doing so can cause us to miss it. Lord, help us to be sensitive to Your voice. Help us also to respond when we hear it.
