Liar, Liar

1 John 2:22 “Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.” The present stage of our culture rarely uses the word lie or calls one a liar. It seems too strong. If a person or culture differs from the Bible, they are at fault. This verse gives some insight into the beginnings of a liar. I think of a liar as one who doesn’t tell the truth on a regular basis. While that is correct, today’s verse says it’s the one who denies Jesus. This is interesting. We give room for honest doubt, but God doesn’t. Romans 1:18-20 explains it: “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” It first says that those that deny God suppress the truth. It says that God’s invisible qualities, His power and divine nature are clearly seen. I believe the reference to creation means that it’s the evidence. This concept is huge. By observation, we know that things devolve. A room doesn’t become clean by accident. It must be cleaned. A clean room is evidence of a cleaner. Creation is so fantastic. Each day we live we see more marvals. The beauty of it is one. My house backs up to a golf course. Looking out our window is an experience. I call it green therapy. The beauty relaxes me. I can feel tension leaving. The person who doesn’t see God here, the bible calls a liar. Because we are part of creation, our heart resonates with it. This response is part of worship. To deny is to deny the obvious. The Romans passage gives a reason why they suppress the truth, it’s their lifestyle. “Who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” They want to continue to do what they want. Acknowledging God makes one accountable. If we ignore Him and His rules, we can go our own way. Our culture advocates evolution. It attempts to argue that this evidence is not scientific, and only scientific things may be discussed in certain arenas. The shapers of culture are trying to distance God. It all seems clinical and neet. But today’s passage isn’t so graceful. It calls them liars. We are all liars at some levels, by this test. Because there are areas of our lives inwhich we don’t want to let God in. We are afraid that He will want us to change. So, we may not say “no, Lord”, but we’ll say “not now”, we’ll ignore it. This leads down bad paths. If we can ignore Him in one area, we can do it in another. This is a progression that leads to becoming a liar. Lord, help us to acknowledge You. Help us to yield to You.
