Exodus 30:18,19 “You shall also make a laver of bronze, with its base of bronze, for washing; and you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. “Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it;”
At the last supper, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Peter misunderstood the meaning, so he originally declined. Jesus said that is was necessary if he was to be part of Him. Then Peter said, then wash all of me. Jesus answers Him in John 13:10, Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”
Here’s what I draw from this. Because of their association with Jesus, they are forgiven. However, as we walk through this world we will sin. We don’t need to be forgiven again. Just to be cleansed. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” As we go through our days, we will sin. We are to ask God to forgive and cleanse us.
We feel refreshed when we are cleansed. It’s distracting if we are dirty and walk in a clean house. We are hesitant and move carefully. So, also when we sin or think of impure things, we are soiled. We are to go to God to get our feet washed. It’s appropriate and He wants us to deal with the sin. Yes we are forgiven, but we are soiled and need cleansing.
Lord, thank You for this process of cleansing. Help us to practice this. Help us to stop walking in guilt and distraction. Thank You for this caring act that You demonstrated for Your disciples.
