Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
We are His workmanship. If we were to visit an art gallery, they often group an artists work together. Sometimes it’s all in a particular room. God has many things that He has built; creation is a very impressive body of work. I never cease to be amazed at the fore thought that went into it. The intricacies of design frequently impress me. For example, our hearing is incredible. The small parts and their function. What came to my awareness was how our hearing is protected. It’s deep within our heads and the pathway to get to it is curved to keep water out. A very cool design.
Today’s passage says that we are His workmanship. This is talking about the new creation that we have to choose to be. When we accept Christ, He gives us a new nature. Ezekial 36:26,27 says, “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.…” This is the beginning of the sculpture. It’s as if we are a large mound of clay. To switch metaphors, when we choose to be on His team, He takes personal interest. Much like a coach gives special time to gifted players, so we get His attention. Everyone craves this. As we get immersed in the bible, He talks to us. He will emphasize particular passages. These will be lessons for us to learn. We may feel insecure and say “I’m not a star athlete worthy of attention.” However,we have all been given gifts and talents. Ours may not be the prominant ones, but we have gifts. God works on those. We would probably be stressed out and anxious, if we were obvious to all. Those that are to be very visible were given the nature and lessons to accompany that. God pulls you aside to work on your own talents. He is proud to have us. Much like a beaming parents on awards night, so God is proud of us. We need to allow that to sink in. It’s true. The longer we walk with Christ, the more evident His work is evident in us. To go back to art, much like a Van Gogh is obvious by to onlookers, so people start to recognize God’s marks upon us. Part of that is the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.…” Galatians 5:22,23. I can remember a song sung in church long ago. One of the lyrics was, “they will know we are christians by our love.” That is evidence of Him. Lord, thank You that You are so interested in us. Thank You that You are proud of us and continue to be patient with us. Thank You that aren’t done with us and are patient with us.
