Christ: Our Physical Therapist

Exodus 4:11,12

The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
This is God’s response after Moses complained that He didn’t speak well. Unfortunately we all suffer from these same insecurities. We have stopped many intentions to do good, because of this. Many more would be ministered to, if we weren’t shackled by fear. This was a byproduct of the fall. While we were all made differently, the fall thinks the worst. We weren’t intended to have the shame, guilt and fear. It hurts. So, we are all trying to cope with this unnatural addition. But it’s like a fish out of water. We are gasping for breath. In this verse, God tells us the right way to think. Instead of allowing our fears to limit and shame us, trust Him as creator and director. He made us the way we are. He didn’t make a mistake. This is a message that would heal many hearts, if it were allowed. All of our limitations would be seen as different. Instead of being embarrassing, it would just be. Not bad or good, it’s just us. “Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, The Lord?” We don’t understand why He made us this way? We may need to process bitterness and pain just on the fact that He allowed it. He won’t rush us through this, so we shouldn’t minimize it with ourselves or others. Lord, help us to be patient with ourselves and others. The next sentence is also healing: “I will help you…and will teach you..” This brings hope and should be applied often. A new insecurity surfaces often. God is aware and He is the physical therapist that will help us to adapt with condition. If we allow Him, we won’t remain in our crippled state. Sometimes the PT works gently, other times some stretching and challenges are painful. This is why we often don’t see God in our circumstances. We don’t realize that just as the PT needs to inflict pain to get us to walk normally. We don’t understand that He uses pain in our healing. Lord, thanks that You don’t give up on us. Even when we misunderstand and blame You. Thank You, that we are your workmanship.
