Genesis 50:19
But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place?”
Joseph’s brothers were afraid of retribution against them after Jacob’s death. The above verse is Joseph’s response. This should be the attitude of the child of God in any position of power. We have heard about the corrupting nature of power. However, God has kept Joseph humble. Deuteronomy 8:3 says, “He humbled you and let you be hungry and fed you with manna…that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” The Israelites learned to rely upon God. They were lowly in the desert, but eventually became a world power. The lessons of the wilderness were to carry over. Joseph looked back and saw the desperate states that he was in. He never forgot that. God also gives us present reminders to keep us humble. We all have reminders of our humanity. Paul had his thorn in the flesh. Some think this was bad eyesight. Today he would be wearing coke bottle lenses. They would be red and difficult to look at. He prayed on several occasions to be rid of this ailment. But Jesus responded with, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” 2 Cor 12:9 Paul was one of the greatest of God’s servants. But the Lord knew his weaknesses. Paul would have been arrogant if he were to be used in such a manner. God knew he needed an ever present reminder of his dependance. Joseph also had a very humble attitude. He knew that all of his power and status was because God was using Him. Years later Nebuchadnezzar was instantly humbled. In Daniel 4:28-32, he was admiring his kingdom and he credited it to himself. Just as the words were on his lips a voice came from heaven, declaring that his power and kingdom would be removed for a time. Unfortunately, he was warned a year earlier. It remained with him for a while. But then his arrogance came back. Lord, thank You for keeping us humble.
