Hebrews 11:31
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.
“We heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you…and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan…whom you utterly destroyed. And when we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man.”
The people of Jericho were terrified about the future judgement. Rahab responded in a way to make peace with the spies. I’m not sure why the king didn’t try to do this with Joshua. She knew that if she didn’t do something, she and her family were doomed.
There is a future judgement for all people. I can remember being afraid of death. I was healthy and supposedly had decades of life ahead of me. Yet I was unsettled about what would happen after death. I was spiritually sensitive. I raised my hand at a gospel presentation as a teenager. However, I didn’t understand what was going on. I just wanted to get right with God. About eight months later, I made a more informed response to the gospel. During those months, I was unsettled and unsure why. Receiving Christ was like being rescued out of a tossing sea. Just as Rahab felt the fear of future doom, so did I. When the opportunity came I took it. People receive Christ for many reasons. Avoiding bad things in the future is one of them.
Rahab had faith that she would be spared. Those that trust in Christ, also have faith. God rewards them with regeneration. God works in our hearts through our circumstances. Many things make us unsettled. God tosses out the lifeline at many times in our lives. Faith is our reaching out and grabbing it. Even as christians, we constantly have opportunites for faith. Will be respond to Him? There are always more challenges. Lord, help us have the faith to respond to You.
