Genesis 40:6,7
When Joseph came to them in the morning and observed them, behold they were dejected. And he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were with him in confinement in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so sad today?”
This is an amazing passage. Here Joseph is a long way from home. At his home, he was favored. Then he served Potifar. He was favored there as well. While in that job, he was accused falsely and put in prison. No one would have blamed him if he wanted to mind his own business, do his time and get out. No pity party. No resentment. He’s serving. He was gifted in administration. He would be out in two years running the country. But here he is serving his fellow prisoners.
We will have down times. God uses those to mature us. We are often misunderstood and have to suffer consequences unjustly. Here Joseph makes the best of it. This is very difficult. He doesn’t forget it. He tells it to them after the interpretation of the dream. But he doesn’t allow it to make him bitter. He goes about doing what he always does, serve. Here he is walking caring for the prisoners. This is a great thing to get our minds off ourselves, focus on others. Lord, help us to not focus on the injustice, but to trust that You’ll get us out of it and You will somehow make it work for the better.
